Spooky’s Story

💔 RIP SPOOKY 💔

We have been dealing with a tragic case today. Spooky was a much loved pup, not quite a year old, he was microchipped and all his papers were in order.

On Feb 13th he managed to escape the property, he was seen being walked by someone. His owner was trying to find him, ringing the police, kennels warden etc. On Feb 14th at around 5 pm his owner tracked down the person who had picked Spooky up and was told he was now with the police.

This morning the owner had a call to say that Spooky had been put to sleep because he was found wandering with no muzzle on. This is against the law, regardless of breed or what restrictions a dog has, they have to be given 7 days for an owner to claim them. At this point a dog can be seized and a court hearing will follow to decide if the dog can be returned to the owner.

The police had refused to return Spooky’s body, they wanted the owner to pay £300 to have his ashes back. We gave his owner contact details for one of the Dog Legislation Officer’s at GMP police, he managed to find out where Spooky’s body currently is, he will be cremated and the ashes returned to his heartbroken owner without the £300 fee, we would like to thank this Dog Legislation Officer for his input.

The owner, along with us has been trying to get answers from the Dangerous Dogs Unit at GMP but our calls have not been returned. A serious complaint will be lodged with them.

It’s virtually impossible to sue the police because of legal costs involved, however, we would hope that a compensation offer will be made to Spooky’s owner. GMP police are usually fair and reasonable when it comes to seized dogs, we would like answers as to what went so tragically wrong in this case.
