Tyson’s Story

πŸ’” RIP TYSON πŸ’”

Yet again we have a heartbroken family member of a seized dog informing us that their dog has died in police ‘care’.

Tyson was seized at the end of May after being accused of injuring someone, this is unproven so far, as no proof of injury has been received by his owners.

Today they had the devastating phone call from Northumberland police to say that Tyson had died. They were informed he died from parvovirus.

This indicates that dogs are not vaccinated when they arrive at kennels plus there are no isolation facilities at the kennels.

The approved kennels used by the police are failing these dogs. This is often not the fault of the Dog Legislation Officers as they don’t get to choose which kennels hold seized dogs. Kennels are invited to submit a tender to gain the contract, it is likely, due to budget constraints, that the cheapest facility will gain the contract.

As dogs are seen as property in law, suing the police force is not a viable option, the maximum an owner would be compensated is the purchase price of the dog. Any case against the police would need to be privately funded, this is beyond the financial means of the majority of dog owners.

If you live in any police force area where dogs have died in the care of the police, please write to your MP expressing your concerns about the welfare of seized dogs.

Please also use our template to send to DEFRA asking for changes to the kennel standards for seized dogs https://www.saveourseizeddogs.org/campaigns
